A Retail Secret

Late in life, I came to the retail world by curiosity and necessity.

Born in Europe, I have always been on the customer side of the counter purchasing costly items be it in Paris, Monaco, Geneva or New York City. I was a polite customer, but one not giving much  thought about the sales person’s everyday life, or their  life beyond the smiles and efforts to please and make a sale. But from one day to the next, with an apron and a name tag, I became that employee, that sales person. I was a bit (actually very much) scared. Will I be good enough, learn quickly enough and  be able to be on my feet for so many hours and still smile? Will I jam the cash register and cause a shutdown of the store because of my total lack of experience? Then the miracle happened. I was not alone.

Each one of the other employees was  kind, encouraging and so patient!

I came to admire these women working for so many hours and having most of the time 3 jobs, running from one to the next  with no complaints. These hard working women took the time to encourage me while graciously presenting merchandise to the customers. They were all so generous to help their peer by getting me coffee for my 5 minute break or sharing part of their lunch or a cookie or saying “good job” when the job I had done was not really that good!

All of this was happening in an atmosphere of laughter and great courage. There is a secret to the why and how of such a happy place and this happy face behind the counter…the manager.
