Bricks 4 Kidz – Imaginations Soar on Challenge Island!

By Helene Foster, Director

Imagine learning science, physics and math without even knowing it! Kids of all ages learn best with hands-on activities that are fun, challenging and engaging. That’s the premise of an innovative program now being offered by Bricks 4 Kidz. In addition to its popular engineering, robotics and stop-motion animation programs and birthday parties, Bricks 4 Kidz in Coral Springs is pleased to present Challenge Island.

Created by award-winning educator and author Sharon Duke Estroff of Atlanta ten years ago, Challenge Island is a whimsical, wildly popular enrichment program that promotes creative and critical thinking skills in children. Loosely based on a well-known reality television show, Challenge Island has kids dividing into cooperative tribes and taking on a vast array of exciting challenges set on action-packed thematic “islands.” The innovative programming reinforces STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and core language arts skills. Bricks 4 Kidz in Coral Springs is the first location outside of Atlanta to offer this program. On a recent Friday in November, 68 sixth grade students at Imagine Middle School at Broward created “rollercoasters” on Shark Tooth Island. They were excited to be the very first school to experience the program. Students were randomly sorted into nine tribes which they creatively named, appointed a “Tribal Leader” and designed and tested three marble coasters. They quickly rose up to the challenge which progressively became more difficult as they added a variety of recyclables, boxes, lots of duct tape and various everyday objects.

“The activity fit perfectly into our week’s curriculum where we were exploring mechanical systems and models,” says Nancy Clewner, Imagine Middle Science Teacher and Social Studies Coach. “The kids were actively engaged and thoroughly enjoyed all of the Challenge Island activities. We look forward to our next challenge at the end of December!” Bricks 4 Kidz and Challenge Island, under the direction of Helene Foster, are both available for enrichment programs, field trips, scouting groups and birthday parties.
