Building a Community of Runners

An active member of Westglades Middle School’s PTA, Kristina Stein has been working hard with other members of the community to produce the school’s fourth annual  5K Run and Walk called Building a Community of Runners on Saturday, May 4. Melissa Hinton, winner of Fort Lauderdale’s A1A 5K will be helping with this year’s event. Active with the North West Broward Roadrunners Club, she recently posted a shout out to Westglades middle school saying, “The kids of the Northwest Broward Road Runners Youth running program are training now to run the race! If   you would like to join us and cross the finish line strong, reply to this post or sign up at www.NWBRRC.com!”

Runners or walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the crowd of what is estimated to be around 500 participants. Christina says, “every year has gotten a little bigger. Last year we had more than 350 runners and this year we can have up to 500. The money raised will go towards technology for the school.” Every school in Parkland has committed to their involvement in this years race. The runners club is especially excited that children of every age will be in better physical shape or more motivated as a result of being part of this competition, whether they race or help with organization.

An event that has always given back in some way, the Student Government Association at Westglades  is responsible for promoting the race and also for deciding where proceeds will be donated. In past years they have supported juvenile diabetes research as well as the Make-A-Wish foundation. For 2013, the SGA made a decision to support technology in the school.

Erik Lindgren is a member of the running club with a child attending Westglades. He is very passionate about the race and the events around it . He points out that there will also be a 1 mile fun run specifically for the younger children as well as food and vendor booths. “I know it’s going to be a terrific day that brings families and the entire community together! I’m really glad that all of the schools in Parkland will be part of this fun time that will make a difference for the availability of technology for our kids.”

The run begins at 7:30 AM on Saturday, May 4 in the east parking lot of Westglades Middle School, 11000 Holmberg Road, Parkland. Registration will begin at 6:30 or participants can also register online at www.Active.com or call 754-322-4800 for more information.
