Creative Summers Start Here!

American Heritage summer day camp has been offering children and families spectacular summers full of fun activities for more than 30 years. With a well-known and stellar reputation, children come from three counties to participate in the fun every summer with a variety of engaging activities. Camp Director Nancy Bowen has been leading the program for more than 20 years.

On weekdays  from June 10 through August 9, the camp consists of three three-week sessions. The camp day begins as early as 7 AM and concludes at 4 PM. There is aftercare available until 6 PM if necessary.  In addition to a traditional recreational summer day camp for children 3 to 14, the program also offers tennis camp, soccer camp, a six-week theater camp, and this year will begin a specialized robotics camp that will have a maximum enrollment of 24 children for each three-week session. Mrs. Bowen says, “Each session of robotics will have different projects, so if a camper wants to take Robotics camp all summer, they’ll have three different projects to work with.”   When listing the variety of choices, Mrs. Bowen also adds, “Children in need of summer school or enrichment classes can be part of our summer school/day camp program where there are classes in the morning, and then the usual day camp activities starting at 11:30.”

Concerning field trips, Mrs. Bowen says, “Three, four and five-year-olds do not leave campus. We bring activities on campus including things like pony rides, petting zoo, water slides and other fun activities. As the child’s age increases, there are more activities throughout the week that are off-campus, but highly supervised.”

The day camp tuition includes daily bus service to and from camp, all field trips and several healthy lunch choices and snacks throughout the day. Parents will be glad to note that American Heritage Day Camp has a low 1/5  ratio of staff to camper. Every age group has an adult Unit Director, who is a teacher during the school year, Senior Counselors, all college age over 18, and Junior Counselors, 16 & 17.  Mrs. Bowen is confident in the camp’s carefully chosen staff. “Before camp begins, they go through 18-24 hours of pre-camp training and team-building that gives each Unit Director a chance to get to know their staff, so when the campers get here we’re all set.”

American Heritage Day Camp has earned its reputation for excellence in summer camp programs, in part, because of the views of their warm, friendly and able Camp Director, Nancy Bowen. She sums it up thoughtfully. “Our goal is for every child to feel safe, but to take a chance; to engage in an activity that they’ve never tried before. We want them to expand their learning experience and make new friends.”
