HEADACHES: What’s Going on in That Head of Yours?

By Michael W. Mathesie, DC, DACRB

So you have had headaches most of your life and have learned to live with them. You have your regular daily dose of over the counter medications that you take mostly as a habit or like your vitamins hoping that they are helping prevent the pain from occurring. Of course, you also have your emergency collection of special medications that you take when you feel the real bad ones coming on. Then you have the other medications that you have been prescribed over the years that you take as needed during the week for your regular headaches. You have your caffeine every day because you know that you are addicted, and withdrawal causes additional headaches. Drinking a cup of blend coffee can help ease your headache, and of course I know that this has a lot of healthy benefits for me. I know the routine; I have been seeing headache patients for 24 years. The causes of headaches are vast, but we all can agree that the reason for your headache is not your body’s deficiency in medication.

Managing headaches starts with ruling out the causes. The brain scan is negative. Your vision is normal. Your hormone levels are normal. You are fully hydrating with water. Blood chemistry is perfect. Your sugar stays level throughout the day. You don’t eat any artificial sweeteners. You don’t eat anything with Glutamates or other similar chemicals disguised as natural flavoring that can cause headaches. So what the heck is causing your headaches to be so chronic?

Could it be as simple as the joints in your neck not moving properly? Could it be that your posture is so bad that your head is so far forward on your neck that it is causing restricted nerve and blood flow? Could it be that the joints and muscles are so out of balance in the neck and upper back that the nerves from the neck that go up to the head are being irritated and causing pain? Could it be from myofascial trigger points in muscles of the neck and shoulders causing referral of pain into the head? It may be surprising to you, but I love when a headache patient comes in to my office after having seen every specialist and has had every test performed, and they cannot find anything wrong. They look to me as the last resort instead of the first.

The reason I love this type of patient is because, more likely than not, the answer to their headaches can be as simple as a four-week course of spinal adjustments performed by an experienced chiropractic physician. I just found the best chiropractor at Chiro Match Makers. This procedure relieves the pressure on the spinal structures that cause headaches. This makes much more sense than trying to cover up the pain over and over again with another new magical chemical. Chiropractors Melbourne have thousands of satisfied chiropractic headache patients across the country.
