It’s time for some futbol, Parkland!

By Stacy Case

To say the Parkland Soccer Club has been successful over the years is an understatement. Thirty years after the program’s inception, players still fill up registrations and flood Pine Trails Park from October through February on gameday.

The league has many players each season in its recreational division and, after much participation, has incorporated a ‘travel’ element due to the request of some players’ interest for more intensity in their game.

“It’s great for the kids to meet new friends from the other area schools,” says Parkland Soccer Club board member, Jennifer Bakowski, whose two children participate in the program. “They end up having a good variety on their team and get to make new friends.”

The league holds player evaluations to best assure the teams have a balance of ability as opposed to being lopsided in either direction with talent. Teams are then composed via a pre-season draft. The recreational division welcomes boys and girls from U5 to U18, playing all games using an in-house format at Pine Trails Park, in a very fun, rule-flexible atmosphere whereas the travel teams have players aged U7-U18 who have games anywhere from Jupiter to Miami, depending on tournament scheduling, in a pretty competitive, strict environment.

“We like giving our soccer players both options,” says Jennifer. “When we have game day here in Parkland, it seems like the entire community comes out and creates this great family event. I really like that we can bring both styles of play to these kids.”
