As part of Nord Anglia Education’s (NAE) collaboration with UNICEF, student ambassadors from NAE schools around the world, including seniors, Lily Kalandjian, and Daniel Ardity, visited New York City last month to share how they are working to meet the United Nations’ Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
“When I heard about Nord Anglia’s United Nations program, I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” said Lily. “My future interests lie in political science and international relations so I feel very fortunate to be involved and exposed to programs like this.”
The Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 goals set by the United Nations to address some of the world’s most pressing global challenges. Each goal has specific targets that need to be met by 2030. During this week-long event, students participated in workshops, seminars and debates, including presentations at the UN’s High-Level Political Forum, a Model United Nations, and events at the UN and UNICEF Headquarters.
Lily and Daniel also learned about what other schools were doing to address the Global Goals and generated new ideas to increase awareness of the goals and discuss how to work with their local communities to create and implement solutions.
“I’m so excited to share everything I have learned from this experience with my peers and teachers. In order to do that I will continue to stress the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals and how we as individuals can make contributions toward achieving them,” Lily shared.
In addition to learning more about how other schools are addressing the Global Goals, the students in attendance honed problem-solving and collaboration skills that they will apply in school and beyond the classroom.
“My experience taught me that diverse perspectives truly do amplify creative problem-solving. Collaborating with students from across the world exposed me to unique viewpoints, and it allowed us to produce solutions to world problems based on what was most successful in our local communities,” said Daniel.
The UNICEF collaboration is another way that students at NBPS have unique experiences outside of the traditional learning environment. Students have the opportunity to practice leadership skills, develop a global perspective and experience different cultures through the students they meet and work with from around the world.
“My favorite parts of this experience was the Model U.N. tournament, which I won an award in, and getting to know and becoming close friends with kids from all across the world. The people are what really made this experience amazing, and they are all friends I plan on keeping in touch with – even though they all live in different places around the world,” said Daniel.
