Soaring to New Heights

By Cheri Tishman

“’The sky’s the limit!’ is no longer true,” said Joan Higginbotham, the keynote speaker at Coral Springs’ 23rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, “because I’ve been above the skies and I know.” A motivational speaker, Ms. Higginbotham is an American engineer and a former NASA Astronaut. She flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery as a mission specialist.

This year’s celebration began with a luncheon at the Church by the Glades and then moved to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts for the evening activities. The theme for 2013 was, “Just Dream it! Soar to New Heights!”

The luncheon entertainment was a ballet performance by the Calvary Christian Academy Dancers, and the evening’s entertainers were the Abundant Life Choir and Dancers and Venus Rising, a women’s drum and dance ensemble in traditional African wear.

Prisca Noisin and Andrew Holmes, both former  MLK Scholarship Recipients, told of the journey of their success and how, without the help of the scholarship, it wouldn’t have been possible.

Ms. Higginbotham’s message to the kids is, “Just prepare yourself.  Have goals. Have dreams.  But they don’t necessarily have to be set in stone. As long as you’re prepared, I think you’ll have a lot of opportunities open to you. Just Dream it! Soar to new heights.”
