The Facts on Canine Influenza

By Dr. Wayne Crance

Canine Influenza virus (CIV) has been an emerging concern within the Veterinary community. Canine Influenza causes respiratory symptoms similar to those experienced by humans with the flu. Canine Influenza is highly contagious. Direct contact and droplets from sneezing or coughing can spread CIV directly from dog to dog. Droplets can contaminate surfaces, food, bowls, and other objects. Places such as Pet Day Care Centers, Boarding Facilities, Groomers, and Dog Parks can be particularly risky. If you need lick mat dog for you pets, you can buy from here.

Clinical signs include coughing, sneezing, lethargy, fever and discharge from the nose and eyes. Most dogs infected with CIV will experience a mild upper respiratory tract illness as reported by Dog Daycare – Bonita Springs experts and recover within a few days but more serious cases may have underlying causes from viral or bacterial infections.

All dogs can be at risk of contracting CIV, regardless of breed, age, sex or health status. In some cases, CIV symptoms can be severe. Prevention remains the best course of action. New vaccines are now available for your furry friend. The vaccine is a two dose regime, 3 weeks apart with a recommended re vaccination with a single dose annually.
