The Tedesco Family

Coral Springs residents since 2002, Karen scoped out Coral Springs before relocating the entire family here from New York. Today, her husband David is happy that she did so. “I like the sense of community. It’s a young community, very family oriented, lots of sports and the kids have stayed active all year round since they were little. There are also a lot of northerners.”

Although their oldest brother, Tyler, is living in Manhattan since graduating from NYU, children Bianca, 15 and Austin, 17 are active in their schools and on Lacrosse teams. Bianca is a freshman at Pine Crest School and plays attack for both them and the LAX Maniacs, a travel team based in Jupiter. Math is her favorite subject and, she says, “My favorite part of the game is my teammates, because I’ve made such good friends.”

Austin will graduate this year from Douglas High School, where physics is his favorite subject. Also playing attack on the Varsity Eagles, it’s a wonder he has time for sports when considering his academic accolades. Last year, he Won the Harvard Book award, first place in the FAU Business Plan competition, is currently a semi-finalist for the National Merit Scholarship, is Vice President for the Broward County National Honor Society, is Co-President of the Douglas DECA Club, and leaves this month for their International competition in Anaheim, California. He will be attending the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.

David works with Bank of America and Karen works with an insurance company. Necessity being the mother of invention, Karen is the founder of the Coral Springs Chiefs Lacrosse Club. “When we moved here, there wasn’t much lacrosse in South Florida. When Austin went to high school, the residency rule for Parkland changed and we needed a place for the kids to play. I started the Chiefs four years ago because there were about 75 children in Coral Springs who wanted to play.” Karen explains her involvement. “I was the Secretary for the South Florida Chapter of the US Lacrosse Board and an administrator for Tyler’s high school lacrosse program when he was at Pope John Paul.”

When asked about other family activities, David chuckles, “Lacrosse pretty much consumes all of our time. I do like golf, but I don’t get to play as often as I’d like.” Karen says that when Bianca goes off to college, she hopes to. “Move to the beach and travel to wherever she’s playing, and visit Austin and Tyler back up North. I think there will be a lot of traveling for us in the next four years.”

For now, the Tedesco’s time away from school or the fields is centered on being together for dinner and, without fail, for their traditional Italian Sunday dinner. “We’re usually up early and Karen is making the meatballs and the doing the sauce every Sunday morning. She’s cooking all day,” David says with a smile. Bianca and Austin both nod their approval.  There is never a good excuse to miss Sunday Macaroni Dinner!

Aside from being a family that’s all about lacrosse, Austin adds with no shame at all, “As a family, we’re huge New York Jets Fans. I played with the Chargers for seven years and I still love football. The Jets are our team.”

The Tedescos attend services at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
