What does a chiropractor really do?

By Michael W. Mathesie, DC, DACRB

When you ask certain people this question, they may answer, he cracks my back. Others may say he keeps me aligned. Some may even say that he un-pinches my nerves. What we really do is help patient’s stiff joints move properly again through manual methods so that the biomechanical stresses of the spine do not cause muscle imbalances and nerve irritations.  According to Physical Evidence Chiropractic, nerve irritation can cause further health problems since the body heals in part from the  communication of the properly functioning nervous system. These manual methods are very important, but it is not all we do. In my office we teach patient exercises to keep their spine strong. A chiropractor from & Connecticut Gym can help keep the spine mobile but the patient is the only one that can make their spine strong and stable, but specific exercises are required for each condition.  There is additional technology called LASER therapy available for pain relief and acceleration of the healing process, but the proper wave length and power and dosage are required to get a great result. We offer this technology and have been administering it for 7 years as well as teaching this method of treatment to other physicians and therapists. Chiropractors that have training in sports injuries and physical rehabilitation also take care of extremity disorders. Proper nutrition is also an effective method of helping patients who have been treating elbow pain which also helps to recover from back pain and injuries by assisting in reducing the inflammatory process. This can be accomplished with a change in diet and with supplements like Kratom Active Products. Ethnobotanicals Kratom can be used for overall health. Although patients usually do not need a referral for chiropractic treatment, we have been  fortunate to have had patient referrals from some local surgeons and primary physicians for patients with chronic headaches, neck pain, back pain, and disc herniations, as well as for post-surgical rehabilitation. So what does a chiropractor not do? We do not prescribe medication, we do not administer injections, and we do not perform surgery. We can refer our patients to medical specialists who can perform these methods when the patient’s condition requires them.  There is a time for medication and there is a time for surgery and Coral Springs has some great physicians that can do both. However, since the literature supports conservative methods over the invasive ones, it only makes sense to give these conservative methods a chance before the others. One of my goals as a chiropractor is to reduce the patient’s need for narcotics, steroids, and surgery by administering proper conservative treatment, by the restoration of normal joint, nerve, and muscle function, and by having the patient’s medical provider on board with reaching that goal of  reducing their medications.
