Fun is Always in Season…Galaxy Skateway

For decades, Galaxy Skateway has been ‘the’ place to see and be seen. From a popular teenage hangout to a nice, cool place to stroll around in during the steamy South Florida summers, Galaxy has been the second home to many since the 1970’s. And now with the holidays here, there is a fun, festive atmosphere to take in once you walk through the doors. The disco lighting, inviting decorations and lively music are still a sure thing regardless of the season.

Interestingly enough, when the Skateway opened its doors years ago, patrons only had the traditional roller skates to use. That is how long Galaxy has been in business. And now, participants are also allowed to use the more popular in-line version as well, whether bringing their own or renting skates on the premises. Regardless of which style the skaters prefer, the Skateway still attracts many people looking for a good time.

“We just want to make sure that everyone who comes here has fun and wants to keep coming back,” says Kathy Marshall, one of Galaxy Skateway’s managers, who has worked there for 25 years. And fun for all ages and abilities is definitely happening here. From birthday parties for youngsters to milestone events for teens, Galaxy has been a permanent fixture in the community and continues to welcome newcomers to the skating experience.

“We get a lot of returning birthday parties, whether it be someone who attended a birthday party here and now wants to have their own, or someone who just wants another one the next year, it’s a great way to celebrate with family and friends,” Kathy adds.

Galaxy is unique in that it is actually one of the very few roller skate-only rinks in all of South Florida. Other similar facilities are spread around South Florida but offer other activities, detracting from the old fashioned roller skating rink feel. Galaxy, aside from it being an All-American environment, also works with local groups for fundraising events.“We like to do a lot of work with schools, local sports leagues and religious organizations too,” adds Kathy. “We cater to just about everybody.”

Galaxy has the conventional 180×80-ft skating rink surface and has an array of skate times and specifics. The rink is open every day but Monday (closed for maintenance), and offers skating after school and on the weekends. During the holiday break, the rink will offer some all-day skating as well as open skate sessions. “It’s always a lot of fun in here and we really do whatever we can to please everyone,” says Kathy. “It’s an economical way to celebrate something special too.”
