Coral Springs Ophthalmology Sq Up

See the Difference

By Shellie Miller-Farrugia

Combined with a passion for quality care, and compassion for those dealing with life altering vision and eye issues, Dr. Ravin Sajnani has consolidated high-tech and a heart for others in his new practice in Coral Springs.

His Mission, “To have more control over how much time I spend with each patient. The way insurances work these days, so many clinics feel like factories, and you are waiting a long time and get very little face time with the doctor. I’ve never liked that as a patient, and I never liked it being a doctor in a large practice. If I felt rushed, I felt like I was doing a disservice to the person in front of me. Here, I have control over that.“

He says that cataract surgery was the impetus for choosing his speciality and, excuse the pun, helps him and his patient both see a life-changing difference. Very emotionally, he says, “It is a beautiful thing to see someone who is suffering from vision problems due to cataracts and then be able to; with a 30 minute surgery, vastly improve their life! I’ve taken patients who could barely see a hand moving in front of them, or a light flickering, to being able to see 20/20 the next day!“

When outlining the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist, Doctor Sajnani says, “By and large the field of optometry is for glasses, contact lenses, and screening for eye disease. An ophthalmologist like myself goes to medical school for four years after undergrad and then to residency for another four years to specialize in ophthalmology. We focus on the medical treatment of eye disease, and also surgery of the eye.“

A self-professed “geek,“ all of the equipment in the office is state of the art. Previous visual field tests were directed by the technician and sometimes felt rushed and confusing. Patients here can do the entire test at a comfortable pace that is directed verbally by a virtual reality headset, with the doctor in attendance.

New patient, Anne Jerome, was very pleased with her visit with the doctor. “It’s been so many years since my last ophthalmology exam, and I was really impressed at the time Dr. Sajnani took to get to know me, discuss my previous health issues, and make sure that I was comfortable the entire time. I never felt hurried, and he was very concerned when I asked questions about his experience with one of my health challenges.“ She also noted that her appointment was on time, without a wait.

Married for two years, Dr. Sajnani’s wife Sejal is his cheerful office manager. The offices are very spacious, clean, and welcoming. When they are not at work, the two enjoy traveling, finding new places to eat, reading, and board games.

Dr. Sajnani speaks three languages; English, Spanish, and Hindi. “Well,“ he says, “my Spanish might not be perfect, but I’m pretty good.“ Sejal says with a chuckle, “He communicates very well in Spanish!“

When asked about surgical procedures most common in his practice, Dr. Sajnani says, “Cataract surgery is one that I do most frequently, but also laser surgeries for glaucoma or polishing lenses after cataract surgery.” Pterygium surgery is another, and sounds scary, but it is usually due to a lot of sun exposure, which causes growth on the eye. In South Florida, this is more common than we think. To protect from this damage, he says, “Buy sunglasses that are UV 400. That is imperative for eye health here.“

Working to expand their insurance network, they currently accept Medicare, Aetna, and Cigna and offer a self-pay option as well.
