It isn’t often that we get a call from a local coach to spotlight a talented athlete. Certainly there are a multitude of accomplished players on every field, but this one stands out in such a noteworthy way; stellar grades, outstanding skills and a valued teammate.
This wide receiver caught four passes in a recent game with Coach Pat Vadala’s 12 U Chargers team, took a big hit and never let go of the ball. Coach Pat tells us, “I showed the video clip to a couple of people and they were amazed…especially when I told them that the player was a girl!”
Yes, this star tackle football player is a female in a male dominated sport, and despite her shy demeanor off the field, there is no stopping this young lady when there is pigskin to be caught, yards to be earned and touchdowns to be made.
Exceptional off the football field as well, Jada Melvin, 12, maintains a high (4.0-4.1) GPA in the 7th grade at Coral Springs Middle School in the advanced GEM program (where she has been since 2nd grade). Her mom Jessica tells us “She’s a tomboy, and she’s probably more athletic than her two brothers, Terry, 13 and Tristan, 11.” She plays flag football for her school and basketball for Coral Springs rec, where her team was undefeated last year. This year she is the team captain for her basketball team. “She excels in everything she does,” her mom tells us. “She’s very self-motivated.”
After seeing her skills and dedication in practice, coach Pat had no trepidation about putting her on the field for every offensive play. “I’ve always admired her for being a girl in a boys game. She fits in with all the boys, and they all respect her. She’s always held her own and she is tall, fast and has a great set of hands. We throw it to her because she is an exceptional player.”
A remarkable athlete regardless of gender, she has 16 catches for the year for 140 yards, with one touchdown. “I don’t think half the teams even realize that there is a girl out there,” Coach Pat continues. “She just plays so well and has great skills. She holds her own whether it’s tackling, catching the ball, running the ball or being hit.”
One of four team Captains, David Vadala, 12, doesn’t classify Jada any differently than other athletes on the squad. “She’s really athletic, she has good hands, and she can jump. She’s a perfect receiver.” He goes on to say, “This year she’s really fit in with our team and we’re all getting to know each other a lot more.”
Excited about the continuing season and Jada’s position, Coach Pat boils it down to the facts without focusing on gender. He says, “She’s a football player. She picks up on things very quickly, understanding new plays right away. She’s a good teammate and always shows up to do her job.”
If your tackle team doubts that girls can keep up with them, don’t bet against our star Charger. Go Jada! But if you’re looking to bet, then you may check out Texas betting sites here.
