North Broward Prep - Dr. George Hart

Collaboration with MIT Brings Math to Life for North Broward Preparatory School Students

At North Broward Preparatory School our goal is to make connections for our students through exciting experiences, projects and events. This spring this philosophy was brought to life through STEAM initiatives, collaborations with MIT and a campus-wide art walk. The projects were led by visiting professor of engineering at Stony Brook University, mathematical sculptor and MIT alumnus.

Dr. Hart champions art, design, engineering and made math visible for our students by creating mathematically inspired art, leading workshops, and sharing lessons he shares on through. The projects empower teachers by offering easily accessible resources with strong curricular connections and giving them the tools and the confidence to incorporate hands-on learning into their own math classes. Many of the activities touch on aspects of math beyond the textbook, such as 3D geometry, topology, graph theory, problem-solving, spatial reasoning, proportional thinking, etc.”

During his visit, Dr. Hart connected our STEAM initiatives by designing and building, in conjunction with our students, a sculpture for our Lakeside Hall Atrium and leading a multitude of exciting math and art workshops for students and faculty at all divisions.

Through these workshops, our students and faculty enjoyed hands-on building/ designing activities. They created artworks and structures that inspired discussion and inquiry and explored ways to make math learning more engaging and memorable.

“In the workshop, students, instructors, and other participants become co-learners and co-creators of design-based projects that excite and engage them. We are very interested in the idea of breaking barriers between formal and informal education using interest-driven activities that connect to school learning and foster a math culture in and around the school, “ said George Hart.

North Broward announced the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) last September, a unique science, technology, engineering, visual arts and mathematics (STEAM) program based on the multi-disciplinary approach pioneered by MIT. The program includes the development of a series of in-school challenges for students that focus on the juncture between the five STEAM disciplines.

In addition to the in-school activities, students from North Broward travel to Massachusetts to participate in an exclusive program each spring along with students from other Nord Anglia Education schools. They will learn directly from lecturers and students at one of the world’s leading STEAM institutions. North Broward’s STEAM discipline faculty members also benefit from unique professional development opportunities through annual workshops and ongoing training with MIT staff.

North Broward Preparatory School is a private school nestled between Parkland and Boca Raton, Florida.
