Inviting or Selling

By Michael Armfield

The other day I received a message from an acquaintance asking me to attend a party. Sounds normal, right? You are asked to attend events all the time. This request to attend was different, strange, and maybe even a little desperate. The message listed all the reasons why I “should” be there.

After I thought about it, I realized a few things. One, I did not know the person very well. Two, it felt like I was being sold all the reasons why I would want to be there. Why would someone have to tell me why I wanted to be there?

As I thought more about whether or not I would attend I started thinking through if I wanted to spend my time at this event. I quickly began thinking about what it would really be like to attend. Then I found myself asking the big question; what was in it for me?

I realized that this mode of thinking was not the one I wanted to embrace in deciding if I would go.

I love going to a party and I love meeting new people and trying new things. That being said, I also value my time. Balancing my family life and running my business is a 24/7 commitment, one that I take very seriously.

With the help of reliable cloud faxing solution the communication was easier for me and I was able to keep some time for me. In your life you have all sorts of folks asking you for your time, your talent, and your treasure. So how do you decide where you will invest your most valuable commodities?

I then began to think about how this experience reminded me of how many businesses operate when they are trying to court new customers.

Think about the last time someone tried to sell you something. Think about the messaging that showed up in your inbox. How did it feel as you read it and realized that you did not need the product or service, and you did not even know the person or company that sent you the message? If you are like most you quickly discarded the message and moved on with your life.

Now I want you to think about how you feel when you receive an invitation from a friend or company that has brought great value to your life.  It brings a completely different vibration. You get excited, you begin to look forward to it, and you quickly respond with a “Yes, I can’t wait to be there”.

Invitations and sales pitches are two very different things. Invitations are received because there is a relationship with the sender. Sales pitches are discarded because you know you are being sold something that is not relevant to your needs.

This month I want you to think about your business and ask one very simple question. Are you inviting people to something they want and need? Or are you trying to sell something to anyone that will show up?

This is a powerful litmus test for your business. You are spending your dollars to market to who you think will soon become customers. Are those dollars being spent well? What kind of conversion rates are you experiencing? What kind of invitation would you like to be sending to your prospects? Would it highlight why “they should be there”, or does it invite them to something they need and love?

We love helping business owners craft marketing messages that are received as invitations and not sales pitches. We love helping you tell your story to folks who match your “raving fan” customer profile.

February is upon us and it is time to stop selling and start inviting folks to the product or service you offer that will change their lives. Are you ready to make 2016 the best year ever for your business?
