Can you recall a warm day at the beach, a day at the park or a carefree bike ride? These are common childhood experiences. However, for a child with cancer, these pleasures are often replaced with hospital stays, chemotherapy and other treatments.
We can’t change these children’s diagnosis, but we CAN help them get the treatments they need. We CAN help fund research. We CAN donate our time to entertain them and we CAN help make their wishes come true.
Over the past year and a half, Kids of Love, a non-profit organization started by kids to help kids, has been creating programs and organizing fundraisers to help children with cancer and their families. Monies raised have gone towards treatments, help in paying doctor’s bills, food for families and education.
Kids of Love has helped many children over the past several years; here are two examples of the significant impact they’ve had on others:
At 16, Luisa was diagnosed with a rapidly growing tumor behind her eye. Doctors advised immediate surgery, but because she did not have insurance and was not a permanent resident, the hospitals were unwilling schedule her. Within two weeks of hearing Luisa’s story, Kids of Love hosted a fundraising car wash, which funded Luisa’s insurance and surgery! Today, Luisa is doing well and is looking forward to her junior year in high school.
Adorable and energetic, Melissa was just 6 when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her wish was to have a wig that resembled the beautiful red hair she’d lost during chemotherapy. Kids of Love arranged the creation of a custom real-hair wig, similar to a 4×4 lace wig, that was fitted so that she could wear it during all activities, even swimming! Best of all, it was dyed to match Melissa’s own natural hair! Kids of Love is also providing math tutoring for Melissa so she can make up the work she missed while undergoing treatment.
