Coral Springs & Parkland Soccer Programs Score Big on Community Impact

By Ashley Ferraro

As the new year begins, Coral Springs Youth Soccer (CSYS) and Parkland Soccer Club continue their long-standing commitment to serving the community through outstanding youth recreational soccer programs.

CSYS is in the midst of an exciting season, with over 2,000 young athletes participating. Known since 1976 for its emphasis on fun, family, and community, CSYS remains a standout organization in Coral Springs, welcoming players of all skill levels.

“This season has been amazing so far,” said Dave Phelps, a long-time volunteer and CSYS board member. “Every Saturday, there’s just a lot of happiness. It’s really nice to be out there and see everyone come together.”

The league recently celebrated its history with a special ceremony honoring founder Hugh Murphy at Mullins Park, where they primarily practice and play. Murphy’s family, along with the mayor, gathered to unveil plans for a permanent bronze plaque commemorating his contributions.

During the ceremony, CSYS awarded three $1,000 scholarships to college bound players in the league. The scholarships serve as a meaningful tribute to Hugh Murphy’s legacy, showcasing the league’s dedication to supporting young athletes and making a lasting impact on their lives.

With its successful parade float and plans to expand the scholarship program, CSYS continues to inspire and empower young players while keeping the community at the forefront of their endeavors.

Meanwhile, a fruitful season for Parkland Soccer Club is also underway. With 1,600 participants, the organization continues its legacy as the largest youth program in the city.

“Our focus is always on giving back to the kids and the community,” said Doug Cole, a long-time volunteer with Parkland Soccer. The program serves as an important foundation for many families in Parkland.

As the season winds down, Parkland Soccer is eager to award $10,000 in scholarships in honor of Pete Gado and Travis Scopino, supporting 10 graduating seniors–including players and referees.

The scholarships are awarded in honor of Pete Gado, who founded Parkland Soccer in 1987, and Travis Scopino, the beloved referee director. “The scholarships go to kids who’ve been part of our program for years,” Doug explained. “It’s a way to give back and support them as they move on to the next chapter of their lives.”

Parkland Soccer is also dedicated to community service. This season, they have already contributed funds to local food charities to support families in need, and they look forward to donating food from their end-of-season picnic as part of their ongoing commitment to helping the community. Additionally, the organization will be collecting gently used cleats and uniforms to donate to underprivileged children in the Caribbean, helping young athletes cultivate their love for soccer by providing essential equipment.

Together, Coral Springs Youth Soccer and Parkland Soccer Club demonstrate how vital these youth sports programs are to our community. Visit www.csys.org and www.parklandtravelsoccer.com to learn more or get involved.
