Don’t Miss the First Time Player Clinic

As the Parkland RedHawks Lacrosse program’s registration is underway already for its Spring season, those who are looking to play for the first time are invited to attend a clinic to see if it’s something they may be interested in. Many of the area sports don’t offer such an opportunity and, even better than the free-of-charge clinic itself, is that there will be loaner equipment for the future RedHawks to borrow that day for their trials. Mark your calendar for  Sunday, Nov. 6th at 3:00pm!

According to Rob Windesheim, who’s in his fourth year as RedHawks president, “The league likes to offer a clinic like this to the first-timers so they can see if they like it.” He says there’s really only one prerequisite for his league’s players…..”They’ve gotta have a good attitude and be ready to have fun.”

The Parkland RedHawks have been the mainstay recreational lacrosse program for more than a decade and call Pine Trails Park their home field. The RedHawks open up in January and play into the early part of May. The league welcomes both boys and girls, and has teams in the following age divisions for each: U7, U9, U11, U13 and U15. Each of the RedHawks teams practice a couple times during the week and play on Saturdays.

And even though RedHawks players ‘age out’ after their U15 season, Rob believes the sport is a gateway to a long life of lacrosse playing.

“One of the things I really like most about lacrosse is the fact that you can play it for life,” says Rob, who still dabbles himself. “It’s a sport that can teach the importance of teamwork at a young age and is also a sport that can offer lifelong friendships.” He continues, “I think our program is also a stepping stone for high school players; we really try to help lay the foundation for them to advance with it,” says Rob.

“Game days are a wonderful community event for our players and their families,” says Rob regarding RedHawks Saturdays, which typically attract about 200 players each season.

And in addition to the lacrosse drills and skills that the players develop from participating in the sport, Rob likes to see when players return to the RedHawks from one season to the next to help create a more rounded athlete for other athletic endeavors, should they so choose.

Under the South Florida Youth Lacrosse League, the Parkland RedHawks play teams from as far north as Jupiter all the way down south to Miami.Next month, the Parkland RedHawks will host more than 100 teams from around the State of Florida for the Monster Mash Lacrosse Tournament. The RedHawks organization is a benefactor of South Florida’s largest fall lacrosse tournament. “I think we have a fun and positive environment, and we want all of our families to enjoy themselves,” Rob says.
