I love this time of year! People tend to be in better moods, retailers and restaurant owners are thrilled as the “season” is finally here, and great food and family all seem to jumble together into a twisted bliss of “the most wonderful time of year.”
It can also be a daunting time; filled with fear, depression and desperation. As the New Year ticks by, the credit card bills come in and remind you of the fleeting holiday and how you have tried to buy happiness and peace on earth. You are faced with the reality of your choices. Ouch!!
Starting today, I challenge you to do something different. Don’t try and buy love, but rather give love freely through the most inexpensive resource you possess, your presence.
Talented leaders I’m pleased to work with tell me how they wish they could “be there” for their children, for their friends, and for their community. They tell me how they are physically “there” with Johnny, but their mind is still at the office. This is not strange or unique, this is mankind’s challenge.
If you embrace the illusion that tomorrow is guaranteed while sacrificing your health, love, and family, I implore you to wake up. Your loved ones and community desire and deserve to see you today.
Please do not put this challenge on your new year’s resolution list; wake up now! If you choose to, you will give your loved ones the greatest gift that money cannot buy. You will give them your presence. You will find that laughter, meals eaten together, and throwing the ball with “Johnny” is what you have always desired. Even better, you will realize that “Johnny” did not really want the new PS3 game as much as he wanted you, your time, and your ear.
