Learning to Love the Game!

Often referred to as the fastest game on two feet, lacrosse is an exciting sport that incorporates the skills of physically challenging contests like basketball, soccer and hockey while having a unique and intriguing style all of its own. Dating back to Native American roots, lacrosse became a favorite of Ivy League athletes and has, in recent years, been enjoying a prolific period of resurgence and popularity in south Florida. The history of lacrosse locally has been an interesting one, changing in several positive ways over the past decade. When the Spectator first came on the scene in 2011, the only local lacrosse opportunities were with the Coral Springs Tomahawks league. As the sport was finally incorporated into some of the local high schools, the Tomahawks lost a lot of players and eventually dissolved. The Parkland Redhawks formed a league that concentrated its attention on developing a love for the game among young athletes who were between sports seasons. As our local population grows and families stretch their vision with regard to athletic possibilities, the Coral Springs Chiefs Youth Lacrosse Program has been busy growing and educating the youngest kids on the lacrosse field for five seasons. Board Member Karen Tedesco is proud of their program and the impact it is having. “Each year we are gaining more and more interest, especially with families who haven’t experienced the sport before. We have free clinics where kids can come out, use our equipment, and get a feel for the game. Once they try it out, they usually get pretty excited.”

Karen is adamant that the Chiefs are making a huge difference for the future of our kids, families and the game of lacrosse. Expecting more than 250 players for the upcoming season, she stresses that the Chiefs are especially focused on recruiting kids from Kindergarten to 4th grade, as their love of the game will perpetuate and insure its popularity for a lifetime. Proof of the program’s viability is in the many young men and women who have come out of the chiefs program and gone on to high school and then college lacrosse success. Two recent alumni are Bianca Tedesco, who will be playing at Winthrop College, a Division 1 school, and Sabrina Kaplan, currently in talks for her college lacrosse placement.

Whether a long-term decision or a diversion from the “usual,” lacrosse is all about fun, teamwork, great exercise and a family of friends that will be around far longer than a single sporting season.
