Mayors Chess (Sq Up)

Mayor’s Chess Challenge

This cerebral event originated in the City of Sunrise and turned into a countywide event. With more than 100 people in attendance at Parkland’s Challenge, the purpose of the day was to bring knowledge and, hopefully, a lifetime love of chess to people who might be interested in pursuing it.

Parks and Recreation Manager Gayle Vasile said, “In large part, chess seems to be a forgotten game.” The Parkland Recreation and Enrichment Center was set up for competitors from virtually every age and ethnicity. Players of any skill rating, including those who had never played, were welcome to take part in the event.

Challengers were given the opportunity to play with the Mayor, Christine Hunschofsky, or any one else on the city Commission. During one game, Mayor Hunschofsky, a chess novice, was talking to her son via facetime in order to glean some tips regarding the “right moves.” Members of the Westglades Middle School Chess Club as well as the Parkland Library’s club were on hand to teach the benefits of chess, compete and also help those who were not as advanced. Overall, the hope is that this successful event has helped an ancient and strategic game to gain a few new fans.
