Multi Talented Moms

Shellie Miller-Farrugia

Mothers….Oh, the complicated subject! Being quite confident that no mom, however wonderful she is, ever had a parenting class before the age of 18, it’s astounding how many women of every age embark on their maternal journey without any idea of a definite outcome. Watching young moms is one of my favorite amusements because it takes me back to those days of false confidence smattered with panicked moments of helplessness. The pediatrician’s phone number was emblazoned in my memory…and there was no Facebook or internet to consult for advice. And despite the best online connections today, there is always one or more women who are willing to help in rearing your children.

“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it is a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.” – Erma Bombeck

A strong sense of faith and community is always a big bonus for mothers when it comes to delving into the unknown waters of rearing children. Believing that there is some entity more powerful than yourself is often necessary when reality hits and you understand that if your imperfect self is the best you can give to your children, maybe their growth will be stunted.

“My mother used to tell me that man gives the award, God gives the reward. I don’t need another plaque.” – Denzel Washington

And what child hasn’t looked at their mom and seen the most amazing Princess, Movie Star and capable woman EVER in their life? When circumstances are dragging down a mother’s confidence, her child is often the first to boost her esteem.

“My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” – George Washington

One important thing to realize is that every mother was once a little girl. Most of us had dreams and goals and, at one point or another, the world seemed to revolve around us. When she’s created this incredibly mysterious and dependent life, most women’s perspectives change immeasurably.

“The natural state of motherhood is unselfishness. When you become a mother, you are no longer the center of your own universe. You relinquish that position to your children.” – Jessica Lange

And then there are the challenges. Each household deals with discipline, rewards and responsibilities in its unique way. Often, Mom is the positive cheerleader, but sometimes she is the one with the ‘tone’ or the ‘look’ that sets things straight.

“My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.” – Mark Twain

And in her imperfections, she is the perfect match for each of her children. After all, Who matched you up with your mother?

“Yes, Mother. I can see you are flawed. You have not hidden it. That is your greatest gift to me.” – Alice Walker

And if Moms had anything to do with it, things would be a little bit different in the world today. More hugs, more homemade cookies and less complications.

“Who in their infinite wisdom decreed that Little League uniforms be white? Certainly not a mother.” – Erma Bombeck
