Playball, Act, Dance & Cheer All Summer!

Heading into their fifth summer, Playball Camps incorporate programs that invite a wider variety of kids to get off the couch when the school year ends. While the Sports camps got the program busy in its early years, Dance, Cheer and Drama were added in 2012 and are part of the permanent lineup. Playball’s Tennis Camp, for ages 5-12 includes 1-1/2 hours of tennis instruction with a certified tennis pro each day. Sports, Dance, Cheer and Drama Camps are open for ages 4-12. All camps, including Tennis, will participate in arts & crafts, swimming, movies, bricks for kids, bounce houses and more special event days.

Just because the kids are on vacation from school, that’s no excuse for them to be sitting around. Director and Coral Springs program founder Danielle Guski says, “As a physical educator, I am on the front line of childhood obesity and the lack of movement and confidence in children. We strive to teach and coach children on the fundamental skills, game strategy and knowledge necessary to participate and be successful in a variety of sports. This increases their self-confidence and they want to play and be outside moving.”

Co-Director and coach, Steve Katz, has joined our area Playball team this year in order to share the love of sports with the children and families served here. Emigrating with his family from South Africa 15 years ago, Steve was trained and then opened a Playball franchise in Palm Beach County, which became quite successful.  He says, “The thing that distinguishes Playball from other programs is that we attend three workshops a year and the emphasis is on child development and improving the quality of kids’ learning and education in both sports skills and life skills. The program is rigorous, age-appropriate and has a lot of benefits for all different levels of kids. Just as young kids are taught to read and write at an early age, by using similar philosophies we teach them how to throw, catch and balance, how to cross the midline and use their different senses and muscles. Our approach is very holistic. The kids see it as fun and games, but they get a lot of developmental benefit that helps them in other areas as well.”

Always proud of the “family” feel of the Playball programs, Danielle stresses that it’s the perfect place for brothers and sisters to attend. “Siblings may participate in different camps during the day,” she says, “but will see each other for lunch and swimming time.” The staff at Playball encourages healthy lifestyle choices like staying hydrated and eating nutritious foods at snack and lunchtime.

Camp hours fit nicely into almost anyone’s schedule beginning at 8:30am with two dismissal times at 3 or 5pm. Before and after care are available for an additional cost. Campers can be enrolled by the day or by the week, except for the Drama Camp that runs in three-week sessions to prepare campers for an end of session production. For parents concerned about supervision and safety, everyone in charge is a professional educator or trained coach who has been background checked, CPR and AED certified. Swimming time is supervised by a certified lifeguard on duty and staff in and around the pool.
