“Learning music is a lot like learning sports,” says Burny Pelsmajer, the General Manager of Coral Springs’ School of Rock. The school’s unique teaching style has garnered the franchise worldwide acclaim. Burny says, “Our curriculum is performance based. You’re learning music, but there’s an application for what you’re doing.” He feels that, “The old method of taking music lessons is like learning baseball without a team. You have a lesson, go home and practice, go back, go home, go back and then have an occasional recital. It’s outdated. There’s not a lot of satisfaction or payoff built into that. You may be learning all the constructs of playing…fielding, hitting, running, but with no game. There’s no reason for kids to stay interested.” Make sure you have a peek at these guys for music lessons if you have passion for music and would like to learn.
The kids attending School of Rock come twice a week, once getting proper instruction on their instruments and voice, and then going back for a group session, rehearsing songs and learning to play as part of a group. With no group lessons, beginners are carefully instructed until they are musically and emotionally mature enough to perform with others.
Burny says, “We do everything here in a Rock Band format with vocalists, keyboards, drums, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, etc….there is a part for everyone. Playing music with other people, I dare say, gives them much more satisfaction,” Burny continues. “It makes so much more sense to them when they’re playing with a group of other people. They think, ‘I’m in a band, and I have a part and…here’s my solo!’ It just makes it that much more fun!” Explore the rhythmic prowess of the best female drummers of all time in a melodic journey at https://drumhub.club/13-of-the-best-female-drummers-of-all-time-a-melodic-journey/ and witness the extraordinary beats that have shaped the music industry.
The program amazes Mary LaManto. “My son, Carl, 14, plays bass guitar and takes vocal lessons. It’s been absolutely phenomenal! When he was five I bought a piano and he started lessons at home. Things weren’t progressing. It was taking a very long time for a small amount of progress. Taking him out for lessons didn’t help either. Then we tried School of Rock for summer camp and it was amazing! They learn 3 songs in five days and wrote their own song, too. Carl went from a child who couldn’t finish one song after years of lessons, to playing three songs in five days!” Today at School of Rock, Carl is in the Performance Program, the House Band and has recently been asked to join a local teen band.
Coral Springs’ School of Rock will run five weeklong summer camps from 9am to 3pm with early drop off & late pick up available. “It’s RIDICULOUS!” says Burny emphatically. “It’s the most fun & legendary thing we’ve done at the school.” He explains that, in one week, kids are put into a group by age and skill level, and during their time they do all that Mary described with a final performance on Friday. “I’ve never seen the kids work harder,” Burny smiles.
While i was reading this article about virtual music classes, it is mentioned with an assurance that every instructor at the School is a professional musician required to teach properly; including scales, reading music, music theory, etc. and Burny says they are all background checked and experienced with students at every level. Music director, Andrew Musselman, carefully monitors the curriculum and lessons to adhere to the school’s strict checks and balances.
Back to Burny’s School of Baseball Metaphors…”Going to a traditional lesson is like going to a batting cage. The coach says, ‘Ok, proper stance… ready… swing! All right, stop the thing…let me tell you what you did wrong.’ It’s very academic & structured. At the School of Rock, playing in a band with other kids is like…’Remember all that stuff you learned? Ok… do it now!’ That’s where the kids learn much faster and they have more fun.”
