Running for Good!

An active member of Westglades Middle School’s PTA, Kristina Stein has been working hard with other members of the community to produce the school’s fifth annual 5K Run and Walk called Building a Community of Runners on Sunday, May

4th. Melissa Hinton, winner of Fort Lauderdale’s A1A 5K will be helping with this year’s event. Melissa is active with the North West Broward Roadrunners Club and helps train young kids just to get fit or to run competitively. Kids of all ages

can join the Northwest Broward Road Runners Youth running program and train to run the race! If you would like to join Melissa and her group you can sign up at www.NWBRRC.com.

Runners or walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the crowd of what is estimated to be around 500 participants. Kristina says, “Every year this race has grown a little more. Last year we had roughly 350 runners and this year we would love to see 500 runners. All the money we raise will go towards much needed technology for the school.”

The community support for this event has been tremendous.Local businesses have jumped in to sponsor the event and help raise money for the school. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor of the race can get more information by contacting bbgc@aol.com

An event that has always given back in some way, The Student Government Association at Westglades  is responsible for promoting the race and also for deciding where proceeds will be donated. In past years they have supported juvenile diabetes research as well as the Make-A-Wish foundation. This year, the SGA made a decision to support technology in the school.

Erik Lindgren is a member of the running club with a child attending Westglades. He is very passionate about the race and the events around it. He points out that it is a fun community event with food and vendor booths. “I know it’s going to be a terrific day that brings families and the entire community together! I really hope that all of the schools in Parkland will be part of this fun time that will make a difference for the availability of technology for our kids.”

The run begins at 7:00 AM on Sunday, May 4 in the east parking lot of Westglades Middle School, 11000 Holmberg Road, Parkland.  Registration will begin at 6:00 or participants can also register online at www.Active.com or call 754-322-4800 for more information.
