Education, Discipline & Diversity

By Vincent Vadala, Coral Glades High School freshman

My name is Vincent Vadala and I am a cadet in the Coral Glades High School Army JROTC program. I joined the JROTC program to give myself some experience in military drill, discipline, and fitness because it is my goal to become a United States Marine.

JROTC stands for Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, and it is a military-based high school program that focuses on motivating students to become better citizens. Not only is JROTC a good path to take if you have intentions to join the military, but it also teaches confidence and leadership. As a cadet in the program, I feel that JROTC can benefit any student by giving them discipline and skills as a leader, and bringing them closer to other students who are fellow cadets.

There are a few extracurricular activities in JROTC including Drill, Marksmanship and Raiders. I personally decided to join the Raider team because I wanted to stay in shape and  compete in physical challenges. As a Raider, you are pushed to your physical limits in order to improve and prepare yourself for a possible military career. Our team recently competed in two competitions, winning three trophies. The Raiders program has brought me much closer to the other cadets who are Raiders.

I enjoy going to my JROTC class everyday because it doesn’t feel like a normal class. I am surrounded by like-minded people who also like learning about the history and tradition of the United States military, while gaining leadership skills that can be applied in the real world. Anyone who plans on having a career in the military or in business should take a career training course to better themselves as a person and confident leader. For additional Physics Education and career options go online.

When I wake up in the morning, I am excited to attend my JROTC class. The topics that we learn about actually interest me and I am never bored. In JROTC, we participate in group activities daily, working together as teams and appreciating how others go about solving problems. The JROTC program has a large focus on leadership diversity. Although I try to explain benefits of the JROTC program to other students, the only way to truly experience it and gain skills as an effective leader is to join the program.
