It’s all about women, friendship, and reaching out to the community. Since 1987, the Parkland Women’s Club has promoted education, literacy and civic improvement in local communities, not just Parkland.
Members include Parkland residents as well as women who live in Coral Springs, Coconut Creek and Boca Raton. In addition, the Parkland Woman’s Club (PWC) is affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Club, which has the largest organization of women volunteers in the world. The General Federation was founded in 1890, with the motto “Unity in Diversity.”
The local PWC group, consisting of members ranging from young mothers, business women and retired women, exemplifies the national club’s mission through various charitable projects. Some include working with Friends of the Parkland Library, hosting a Fashion Show funds for student scholarship funds and collecting care packages for the soldiers serving overseas through “America’s Moms for Soldiers.”
The PWC also has a club for teens called the Parkland Juniorettes or “P.J’s.” Their Advisor, Cynthia Bloom, is excited to begin her fourth year with this energetic group of young ladies. Given an opportunity to earn community service hours, meet and interact with a diverse group of young women, take an active role in one of the world’s largest volunteer organizations, volunteering with Feeding Westchester in New York, plan outstanding activities, develop leadership skills, these girls also build an impressive college resume.
Both clubs have a Board and Board Meetings. The Juniorettes meet the first Monday of every month at a different member’s home and PWC meets the third Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at Cypress Head Clubhouse.
This summer, the Club collected $700 from their Macy’s “Shop for a Cause” sales and were able to purchase 125 backpacks for kids in foster care. From school supply donations, they collected more than 100 notebooks, 400 pens, 320 pencils, 200 erasers, 150 glue sticks, dozens of boxes of crayons and markers and much more! All of the backpacks and supplies were delivered to ChildNet for distribution to the neediest children in foster care.
Two of the Club’s upcoming dates and events are their Annual Membership Kick-Off Meeting on September 19th at the Cypress Head Clubhouse at 7:00 pm. Hear details about PWC’s plans for community service this year. October 26th join them in the Safewalk to support “Women In Distress,” 7:00am at Tradewinds Park.
Make new friends or re-connect with the old, all the while serving your community through fund raising and community service activities. The Parkland Women’s Club asks for your help in achieving another rewarding year in 2013-2014. Their charity this year is to “Adopt” a group of 19 teenaged girls who have been abandoned, abused and neglected, and are in need of some “TLC” from “PWC.”
