Not Your Average Role Models- Not My Daughter…Find A Cure Now!

By Ellen Davis

Most mothers will tell you that kids learn best by example.

Even without realizing that their children were watching intently, the moms of Not My Daughter..find a cure now! were making an impression that has gone even further than the $215,000 raised in three years to help end breast cancer. They were igniting activism in their children, who are now getting involved with their mothers’ grassroots cause.

Not My Daughter…find a cure now!, originally comprised of ‘moms on a mission’ to eradicate breast cancer, is now growing from within its own ranks, as teenage daughters and sons are taking an active role in the organization.

For Not My Daughter…find a cure now! founder and chairwoman Denyse Hostig, the organization has become a true family affair for many of the committee members. “It is so rewarding to see the kids grow with Not My Daughter…find a cure now! In under four years, our children have stepped up, taking on leadership roles, and are an essential part of our organization. It is a real source of pride and pleasure to work beside them and see that they have such passion to help actively. Our children are a constant reminder of why we have chosen this cause, and that the future is in good hands.”

For their part, the children who are supporting Not My Daughter…find a cure now!  are finding that dedicated effort to end breast cancer is a charitable passion that they have learned from their mothers.

“I have been inspired by my mom’s courage to battle breast cancer and by what she has done through Not My Daughter…find a cure now! Everyone involved in Not My Daughter shows that through working together, you can achieve great things – and have a great experience in the process,” says Avery Hostig, 15.

At the heart of the organization is her mother, Denyse, a breast cancer survivor who launched a movement to save future generations from the devastating disease. Enlisting the support of 16 friends in the Parkland/Coral Springs community, Denyse and her committee of volunteers planned events, sold merchandise, and grew her idea to Not My Daughter..find a cure now! Their signature event, the Annual Shopping Boutique and Luncheon takes place this year on Monday, October 14th at the Marriott Heron Bay from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Each year, the event has gathered more entertainment, has over 40 unique vendors, outstanding cuisine, and provides an uplifting, enjoyable day to celebrate being part of an extremely vibrant, fun, yet nurturing community. The Not My Daughter…find a cure now! 4th Annual Shopping Boutique and Luncheon is a wonderful day for everyone attending and features talent from the next generation. Music will be provided by Jenny and Ashley Cooke of the Lockets, who are returning for the second year to perform at the luncheon. Another highlight will be a special fashion presentation (ala Project Runway) featuring one-of-a-kind designs by honors students from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Even the models will be representative of the next generation, as young adults and children will be showcasing the eye-catching garments.  proceeds for the event benefit Susan G. Komen for the cure (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale affiliate) Tickets are $75 per person. For tickets and info www.notmydaughter.org.

Like the song “the Greatest Love” says, “Children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”  There comes a time when the everyday life lessons resonate with our children. Sometimes, unintentionally, parents become role models just by doing what they feel is right.
