Off to a Running Start!

The Northwest Broward Road Runners have been training kids to run for over 12 years. Led by experienced adult coaches, the NWBRRC Youth Running Program is planning an exciting fall session this year! The program begins on Saturday, October 3rd at 8am at the North Springs Community Park in Coral Springs. The 8-week program is open to kids ages 6-14 and meets every Saturday morning, with the kids training for their goal race, the Tamarac Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning, Nov 26th. Throughout the 8 weeks, the focus is on building endurance and good running technique including proper warm up, stretching, form, breathing, pacing, and cool down. The Saturday morning workouts are about 50 minutes long followed by a 15 minute stretching and snack period, with some special guests and events planned as well. Each ‘runner’ is placed in a group with others of similar age and ability. The groups are coached by experienced adult runners from the NWBRRC along with assistant ‘coaches’ from local high school track and cross country teams. The program is under the overall direction of head coaches Melissa and Bill Hinton, and Fabio Tylim.

In our program, not every kid is a blazing speed demon, nor do we push them to be. The goal is to show all the athletes how much fun it is to run, to be part of a training group, and participate in a race, as well as instilling a pride of accomplishment. NWBRRC looks forward to introducing running to more and more children in the community!

Registration is being held on-line through a link on the North West Broward Road Runners Club website (www.nwbrrc.com). The program cost is $30 per child and each participant will also receive a special “NWBRR Youth Running Team” Dri Fit T-shirt and a participation medal.

And, because the NWBRRC doesn’t believe running is a spectator sport, they also offer a 5K Beginning Runner Group for adults. This program, which is free to all members of NWBRRC, is under the direction of Melissa Hinton and Angela Chambers, certified coaches of the NWBRRC. Whether you are a beginning runner or are interested in improving your 5K time, this is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to get fit and run together!
