The Spallina Family

Randi and Robert, both attorneys, grew up in south Florida, moved to California and then had their eldest son, Matthew, 15. Soon after, they yearned to be in closer proximity to their relatives living in south Florida, so 14 years ago, they moved to Parkland. Their family continued to grow and now includes Katie,11, and Ryan, 9. Randi tells us, “We love the small town feel, the sense of community and, of course, the schools. Being involved in sports, dance and coaching has brought us together with so many people from so many different places.”

Randi & Robert’s love story began 25 years ago at the University of Florida. Celebrating 18 years of marriage this June, these avid Gator fans have been to all three National Championship games for football and both Basketball National Championship games. Randi says, “We hope our children carry on the tradition and all attend the University.”

Speaking of sports, Matthew is an avid fan. He studies NFL football, NBA basketball and both college football and basketball, aspiring to be a sportscaster. With a photographic memory for statistics, he knows the score of virtually any NFL game in the last 3 to 4 years. A freshman at Douglas High School, he has played soccer and flag football in Parkland.

A fifth grader at Park Trails Elementary, Katie has danced for 9 years and has cheered with the Parkland Rangers for four. A teammate with the Parkland Redhawks for three years, she also enjoys playing piano, creating beautiful art and reading.

Ryan plays four sports on Parkland teams when he’s not attending the 3rd grade at Park Trails. Beginning his fifth tackle season for the Parkland Rangers, he plays rec and travel lacrosse, rec and travel soccer, and just finished basketball season. His 2014 Rangers football team won the Greater Miami South Florida Pop Warner Conference Championship.

Fathering the family’s sports passion, Robert coaches football for the Rangers, lacrosse for the Redhawks and basketball for Parkland’s rec league. He is also an executive board member with the Rangers and has served as its Vice President, Treasurer, Marketing Manager and Webmaster. He is also active in the local Jewish Federation and traveled to Israel twice on missions to learn and raise awareness in the community. Not to be outdone, Randi is in her fifth year of volunteering as a team parent for the Parkland Rangers, is an avid walker and is currently training for her annual corporate run. She has served as a guardian ad litem just like attorney from guardianship law firm in Texas and represented children in adoption and guardianship proceedings.

And the family that plays together…well….does a lot of sports together! Robert says, “Our weekends typically consist of games, games and more games, especially when it is Football season (both Rangers and Dolphins). We also love going to the beach and to local Parkland parks to enjoy South Florida weather and throw around the football, of course!” They also enjoy spending time with their extended family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Both Matthew and Robert had their bar-mitzvahs in Israel two years ago when the family took  Randi’s parents and Robert’s mother on an 11-day journey to learn about the history and life of Israel and the Jewish people. Katie will begin studying privately for her bat-mitzvah, which is next year.
