Here at home, the Latin flavor has grown to make soccer even more a focus for South Florida families. As our Cities and ‘Burbs have grown throughout the years, one constant has grown to new proportions. There is a soccer team for every age group and skill level. For the City of Parkland, though there are travel teams and high school squads, the first steps in cleats and shin guards for most residents’ young children are taken in the Parkland Soccer program,

The club’s Registrar for 26 years, Pete Gado has watched the program blossom from it’s beginning in 1988 with about 100 players to now more than 1300 players in 13 Divisions.

He attributes the success of Parkland Soccer to the dedication of the volunteers, both administrative and coaches. “We provide a decent, wholesome program for the kids. Many of these volunteers have been around for a long time,” says the guy who’s been here since the beginning. Having put four children through the league and then his grandson, Pete says, “We keep on trucking even though we don’t have children in the program anymore.”

After 26 successful seasons, Pete looks forward to one particular change. “This year we’re doing online registration for the first time and we’ll see how that works out. Parents don’t have to meet us at the park for in-person registration with this new system. We’ll have registration all through the summer.” Online registration begins June 7 and pre-season practice starts October 19th. Opening day is November 8 and the closing day celebration ends with a fabulous picnic at Terramar Park on February 14th.

So if it’s going to be your child’s first experience with hands-free Futbol, or their 10th season, get ready for some seriously fun action on the Parkland soccer fields…and get ready to scream, “GOOOOOAAAAAL!!”
